Dogs Get Cancer, Too
It’s bad enough that people get cancer. We all know someone who has been affected by the horrible disease if we haven’t already been afflicted with it ourselves. Research continues to find cures and great strides have been made with many types of cancers. Caught early enough, survival rates with conventional treatment are increasing.
And now, the number one killer of man’s best friend is cancer. There are more and more dog parents dealing with dog tumors every day. Breed of the dog, diet, and environmental factors all play a role in canine cancer.
Oftentimes, dogs can be treated in many of the same ways that humans are treated. Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation are the current mainstays of cancer treatment in both humans and dogs. Unfortunately, it is often much more difficult to “cure” dogs of cancer. Their bodies are different and their responses to treatment also vary. A diagnosis of cancer in a dog isn’t always a death sentence but outcomes are not as optimistic.
As always, prevention is the best cure. If you’re a dog owner, it’s time to educate yourself about what you feed your dog. Commercial dog food is probably the worst thing for dogs to eat. Look for organic brands that list meat as their first ingredients. The food should also be wheat, soy, and corn free (these are fillers used by many of the cheaper dog foods).
Making sure that your dog gets plenty of exercise, fresh air, sunlight, and rest will also go a long way when it comes to your dog’s health.
How You Can Fight Cancer
Getting cancer is one of the most devastating news anyone can have. In order to stay cancer-free in today’s world, you need to have a healthy lifestyle, which will not only get you cancer-free but will help you stay disease-free also. One of the things that you need to do to stay cancer-free is to exercise a lot. You can make it a daily habit to start exercising everyday when you wake up. Exercise not only helps you stay healthy, but it also relieves stress which is another factor why it’ll help fight off cancer.
Another great way to stay off cancer is to do strength training exercises. These exercises will help you build muscle and keep your immune system strong to fight cancer off. A great book to develop leg strength is the Jump Manual which can help in your strength training to keep your body in shape. You can also develop quite an increase in your vertical jump as well. Doing such exercises can reduce your chances of getting cancer as well as other diseases. Keeping your body healthy will general prevent you from getting cancer.
There are many organizations you can join that will help those with cancer to fight it. Along, with preventing cancer, there are also lots of organizations dedicated to find a cure for cancer as well. Whether you have cancer, or if you just want to prevent yourself from cancer, you are not alone. There are many collaborations going on which will help this world become a cancer-free place.
Dangers of Airport Scanners
Security guards face daily dangers because of their job as peacekeepers. However, there is another danger that security guards should be aware of, especially if their work requires a constant use of airport scanners.
If you are a security guard that works to protect the peace in your local airport, you would need to understand how your job could affect your health, too. By understanding these dangers, you will have a better chance of protecting yourself from the harms present in your job. This article will discuss how airport scanners could cause serious problems in the future.
Airport security guard jobs usually include the use of the airport scanners to detect any dangerous materials in the body of the passengers. In bigger airports, these scanners are able to do a full-body check. The scanning process would require the passenger to be exposed to a small amount of radioactive waves.
This type of wave can penetrate through clothing, so it helps the security personnel to detect harmful devices. As verified, being exposed to a small amount of radioactive waves is far from dangerous. However, as for the security guard who handles this job and the actual machine, the every day shift would include a dangerously high dosage of radioactive waves.
Recent studies indicate that this would increase ones chances of having skin cancer. Since your skin will be repeatedly exposed to the terahertz waves, or T-Waves, of the airport scanners, your cells might be altered. This would eventually lead to skin diseases, like the incurable cancer.
To lessen the effect of the T-Waves in your body, you would need to lessen your time near the airport scanners. As much as possible, you should stay away from the source of the waves. Although many security guard jobs require you to operate the scanners, you can prevent too much exposure by moving away from the inside part of the scanner where most of the T-Waves are generated. You can also wear thicker garments for extra protection.
Getting Strength to Overcome
Cancer is a terrible problem all around the World. For most people with cancer your lives will be an uphill battle. Therefore it is extremely important you try to have happy moments when you can. In this article we will talk about a few ways you can have these fun experiences that can help give you extra strength to overcome your obstacles.
The first way to have good experiences is to plan and go on vacation. If you are stuck in a bed you should plan your ultimate dream vacation. This will give you something to look forward to when all your treatment is done. For example I would choose somewhere warm to go because I like the way the sun makes me feel. So you would start out by trying to find a funny sunny place to visit. My favorite is the St George Utah Real Estate area. Here there is great hiking, Las Vegas nearby, fun people and more.
Once you have chosen your destination you can begin planning your activities. Choose activities that will be fun and promote a healthy lifestyle. Once your ultimate vacation is planned all you need to do is go on it. You will find that by planning and going on vacation you get the necessary break to overcome and obstacles.
Smoke Inhalation and Lung Cancer Incidence
Over the past few decades, science has fairly conclusively proved that smoking cigarettes dramatically increases your likelihood of getting lung cancer. The smoke inhalation itself, mixed with the carcinogens in the cigarettes has caused millions of cases of lung cancer, which has led to a significant public relations campaign to help lower the percentage of the population who regularly smoke cigarettes.
The concept of smoke inhalation and cancer led us to consider another type of smoke exposure: wood smoke from the burning of firewood. This can be for heat in a fireplace or fire pit, or for cooking purposes over a wood-burning stove. Throughout much of the developing world, wood-burning stoves are still the primary means of heating food on a daily basis.
A 2005 study was done in Mexico of largely impoverished residents who developed lung cancer. Interestingly enough, 39% of them developed it due to wood smoke while 37% developed cancer due to tobacco smoke. The vast majority of those who developed cancer from wood smoke were women, as they are the primary preparers of the household food.
This concept is important to remember in America as backyard firepits have become increasingly popular over the past decade. While this often is for entertainment purposes as opposed to a food preparation necessity, many families still burn fires often enough that it can impact their chances of getting lung cancer. More study needs to be done on this, as a significant number of people can develop lung cancer from something they consider as “natural” as burning firewood.
Child Cancer is Serious but in Many Cases Positive Treatment is Possible.
Cancer can affect us all, young and old, smokers and non smokers, strong and weak, sadly no one is immune. Cancer affects the cells of the body which under normal (non cancer) circumstances are all tightly controlled in respect to growth, lifespan and the way they interact and reacts to other cells. When affected by cancer these normal functions fail and cells grow unregulated, develop into abnormal shapes, destroy neighbour cells and ultimately metastasize (spread) into tissue and organs.
Sadly as this process occurs, the cancer destroys organs and bones, weakens the body’s immune system, and erodes strength.
The sadly common childhood cancers are Leukaemia (blood), Lymphoma (cancer originating in lymphatic tissue) brain cancer and as children mature into their teenage years, osteosarcoma (bone).
Treatments for child cancers are not dissimilar to those for adults and fall under three main categories: Radiation, Surgery and Chemotherapy. The treatment subscribed will depend predominantly upon the severity and type of cancer as well as the age of the child.
It is hard to cope with cancer for anyone let alone a child, but with 70%+ success rates of a cure, all is not lost. Once a child has been diagnosed they will be referred to a paediatric oncologist (child cancer specialist). The treatment schedule will be decided upon and then followed. There can be short and long term treatment strategies, but once the treatments take affect marked improvements are possible within a matter of months.
Once a child is over the worst of the disease, many oncologists advise trying to resume some form of everyday life, like taking your child to a playground and allowing them to run about (providing it has adequate playground surfaces) enabling the child to overcome the mental experience of what they have endured. Hopefully this strategy will help the child to overcome the disease and in time develop a life just like everybody else.
Even Ink Can Cause Cancer
Numerous studies in the last decade have linked ink to cancer. Most recently a Swiss study actually found the ink printed on cereal boxes can be highly toxic. Few question what seems to be a relatively harmless liquid that is literally intertwined with most aspects of daily life.
Sadly it’s true that ink can contain mineral oils that can pose serious health risks to humans. Certain oils have very real links to issues like inflammation in internal organs, and even cancer directly.
Perhaps one of the most commonly overlooked inks is the type used in tattoos. In less scrupulous tattoo parlors investigations have revealed chemicals in the ink, including toxic metals and compounds known to be potent skin carcinogens. While the FDA has launched investigations into these concerns about ink safety, the more than 45 million Americans sporting tattoos these days seem unphased by the risks. To be sure we’ll see studies in the near future that tie tattoos to cancer, and given the increase in te popularity of tattoos are likely to see the incidence of cancer rise even further.
Even seemingly harmless, empty ink cartridges pose a real risk to us all. Each year millions of inkjet and laser printer cartridges find their way into landfills. In these cases the ink is less of a concern than the actual plastic casing. Plastics used in ink cartridges actual contain toxic oils which over time can leech into ground water, just one additional way our critical water sources come in contact with potential carcinogens.
While the research is indeed troubling, it’s an important step in highlighting the dangers that lurk all around us. Thankfully recent studies have grabbed the attention of groups like the FDA who can certainly do something about it. It’s certainly not a problem that is going to be solved overnight, and the fallout from ink-related cancer will certainly continue for many decades.
Influx Of Cancer Patients Places Strain On Hospitals
The American Cancer Society has projected new cases of cancer for 2012 to be significantly higher than the already intimidating figures for 2011. Last year, new cancer cases were estimated at 1.59 million nationally, with 571,950 of these patients likely to die from the disease. This year, it is 1.638 million new cases.
This of course creates an even greater challenge for our hospitals and their staff, who are treating many of these cases on an ongoing basis. Many hospitals now have or are developing their own cancer wards or fully-fledged buildings dedicated to the variety of cancer treatments now available. The traditional roles of doctor and nurse are being refined, as oncology becomes an ever-growing field of professional specialization. Oncology nurses did not exist 50 years ago, when the treatment for cancer was just plain surgery; now, they are in demand more than ever before.
Oncology nurses can now specialize down even further, into chemotherapy, radiation, hematology, palliative care, and so forth, making this field a diverse career path. There is the matter of the added training requirement, but they are rewarded with a salary rate about 10% higher than their registered nurse counterparts- although still not as high as the nurse practitioner salary. For doctors, there is the added potential of setting up a private oncology clinic or working for various hospitals as a consultant.
As a career path, oncology nursing or ‘doctoring’ is a good choice, however tragic the reasons for that may be. As shown by the data from the American Cancer Society, this disease is not going away any time soon. On the national level, our hopes and efforts must be placed in finding a cure- or, failing that, more effective treatments.
To this end, inspiring work is being done all over the world. Although diagnoses are increasing, so are the survival rates- to illustrate, despite the jump of nearly 700,000 projected cases this year, expected fatalities have risen by a comparatively slight 6,000. Although of course any number of deaths is too many, it is encouraging to see the ratio of survival on the rise. This is due in large part to the innovations of dedicated researches as well as the treatment administered in our hardworking hospitals.
